The Faculty of Geography

The Faculty of Geography of Kyiv University was founded in 1933 by the creation of a department within the Faculty of Geology and Geography on the basis of three departments: physical geography, economic geography, geodesy, and cartography. And since 1944, the Faculty of Geography began to function as an independent division of Kyiv University.

However, the development of geographical science and education at Kyiv University began almost from the time of its foundation. Since the first years of operation of St. Volodymyr University of Kyiv, research and works on the study of natural conditions of Ukraine have been carried out. At the origin of the development of geographical research were outstanding scientists: mathematician D. O. Grave; physicist M. P. Avenarius; physical geographers P. I. Brounov, B. I. Sreznevskyi; geologists and geomorphologists V. H. Bondarchuk and P. A. Tutkovskyi; economic geographer K. H. Voblyi; land surveyors and cartographers M. M. Belonin, V. H. Leontovych, P. K. Nechyporenko; astronomers-geodesists F. A. Bredykhin, V. V. Fedorov, R. P. Vogel, M. F. Khandrykov, A. P. Shidlovskyi, and others.

Currently, the Faculty of Geography is a leading center of geographical education and science in Ukraine, which trains high-class specialists in strategically important areas of development of our country:

– Urban Studies and Planning;

– Regional development management and spatial planning;

– Geographical country studies, political-geographical and international studies;

– Tourism and recreation development management;

– Tourism;

– Geodesy, land management and cadastre;

– Cartography, GIS, and remote sensing of the Earth;

– Transboundary Environmental Cooperation;

– Geoecology;

– Management and ecology of water resources;

– Meteorology;

– Soil Science, Management of Land Resources and Territorial Planning;

– Training of Geography teachers and teachers of natural disciplines of the highest level.

Our faculty trains higher education applicants in 8 departments: physical geography and geoecology; earth science and geomorphology; economic and social geography; country studies and tourism; geography of Ukraine; hydrology and hydroecology; meteorology and climatology; geodesy and cartography.

The personnel potential of our faculty is the most powerful among geographical units in Ukraine. Among our professors are correspondent members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology, Honored workers of science and technology, National consultant of the UN Environment Program (UNEP), Laureates of the President’s Special Award of Ukraine for young scientists, scientific directors of numerous state budget topics, authors of articles in highly rated magazines, scientists with a high Hirsch index, authors of patents, winners of All-Ukrainian competitions of scientific works who love their work and perform it conscientiously.
