The Department of Geodesy, Cartography and Land Management is one of the oldest departments at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The teaching of specific modules within the geodesy curriculum (such as the theory of the figure of the Earth) was introduced at Kyiv University from the very first years of its existence. In 1838, the Department of Astronomy was established under the Physics and Mathematics Division of the Faculty of Philosophy at St. Vladimir University of Kyiv, and was soon renamed the Department of Astronomy and Geodesy. In 1933, the Faculty of Geology and Geography was launched, and the Department of Geodesy was separated from the Department of Astronomy. In 1944, the department was renamed the Department of Geodesy and Cartography within the newly established independent Faculty of Geography. For nearly 185 years, the department has successfully trained specialists: initially geodesists, cartographers starting in 1944, and land management specialists since 2010.

On September 1, 2025, the department officially changed its name to the Department of Geodesy, Cartography and Land Management.

At various times, the department was led by prominent scientists:

Petro Kyrylovych Nechyporenko, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, Professor (1933–1937; repressed in 1937);

Volodymyr Hryhorovych Leontovych, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, Professor (1944–1946);

Mykola Mykytovych Bielonin, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor (also a professor at the Kharkiv Institute of Land Management, Odesa Agricultural Institute, and Kyiv Hydro-Melioration Institute) (1946–1953);

Petro Ivanovych Mykhailovskyi, Candidate of Engineering Sciences, Associate Professor (1953–1954);

Andrii Semenovych Kharchenko, Candidate of Engineering Sciences, Professor (1954–1980);

Viktor Mykhailovych Serdiukov, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, Professor (1980–1992);

Anatolii Hryhorovych Hryhorenko, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, Professor (1992–1995);

Anatolii Mykolaiovych Molochko, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Professor (1995–2012);

Liudmyla Mykolaivna Datsenko, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor (since 2012).

As of September 1, 2025, the Department of Geodesy, Cartography and Land Management employs 16 faculty members (13 full-time/primary staff, 1 internal part-time staff, and 2 external part-time staff). The teaching staff includes: 2 Doctors of Geographical Sciences (including the Head of Department), 2 faculty members holding the academic title of Professor; 12 Candidates of Sciences, 10 of whom hold the academic title of Associate Professor; and 3 assistants, 3 of whom do not hold an academic degree. Two instructors hold certified geodesy engineer and land management engineer credentials. All academic staff members teach courses in accordance with their specialties and qualifications, as confirmed by Higher Attestation Commission documentation.

In 2025, the department admitted students into six educational programs:

At the Bachelor’s degree level:

• Educational-Professional Program “Geodesy and Land Management” (Specialty G18: Geodesy and Land Management)

• Educational-Professional Program “Cartography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing of the Earth (RS)” (Specialty E4: Earth Sciences)

At the Master’s degree level:

• Educational-Scientific Program “Land Management and Cadastre” (Specialty G18: Geodesy and Land Management)

• Educational-Scientific Program “Cartography and Geographic Information Systems” (Specialty E4: Earth Sciences)

At the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree level:

• Educational-Scientific Program “Geographic Information Systems, Land Management and Cadastre” (Specialty G18: Geodesy and Land Management)

• Educational-Scientific Program “Earth Sciences” (Specialty E4: Earth Sciences)

The Department prepares specialists in accordance with curricula that incorporate mandatory humanities and socio-economic disciplines, fundamental general scientific disciplines, as well as professionally-oriented and specialized courses—including specialized modules and seminars—that ensure an appropriate level of training for Bachelor’s and Master’s students, along with educational and practical field training/internships.

Since the establishment of the department (from 1944 to October 2023), 2,343 graduates have completed their studies, including 874 part-time/distance learning students and 1,469 full-time students.

Since 2019, the department has been enrolling students based on a Junior Specialist diploma.

Annually, approximately 180 students study at the department.

Department faculty members provide instruction for first-cycle (Bachelor’s) higher education students at the Faculty of Geography across the following educational programs: EP “Meteorology”, EP “Soil Science, Land Resource Management and Spatial Planning”, EP “Water Resources Management and Ecology”, EP “Economic Geography”, EP “Urbanistics and Urban Planning”, and EP “Physical Geography”; at the Educational and Scientific Centre “Institute of Biology and Medicine” across the following programs: EP “Landscape Design and Greening” and EP “Ecology”; as well as fulfilling state training requirements for military cartography cadets (full-time program) from the Department of Geographic Information Systems and Technologies at the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, an effort ongoing since 1993.

The Department of Geodesy, Cartography and Land Management is fully equipped with modern technical facilities required for professional training, including Sokkia total stations, Sokkia digital levels and theodolites, Sokkia GNSS/GPS receiver sets, and electronic distance meters (EDMs). The department also features “Delta” digital photogrammetric workstations, a “Delta” photogrammetric scanner, and computers running state-of-the-art software.

Specialized practical field training is conducted at the Bohuslav Hydrological Station in the Kyiv Region (since 1998).

Practical coursework topics include:

• Compilation of topographic maps based on stereoscopic survey data;

• Stereophotogrammetric surveying and mapping of existing architectural monuments;

• Creation of orthophotomaps;

• Study of structural stability assessment methods and performance of other engineering geodetic work;

• Cadastral surveying.

The Department comprises:

• Educational Laboratory, which supports the organization of the educational process;

• Educational Laboratory of Digital Photogrammetry.

The auxiliary teaching and support staff consists of 8 employees who facilitate the educational process: 1 head of the educational laboratory, 2 specialists, 2 cartographers, 1 geodesist, 1 land management engineer, and 1 senior laboratory assistant.

Faculty members and staff conduct research in the following areas: geoinformation support for cartographic modeling and map production for educational needs; geodynamic research, including deformations of engineering structures; land surveying, including terrestrial surveys, applying digital photogrammetry methods in architectural measurements and reconstructions; comprehensive thematic mapping, including environmental and medical-geographical mapping; and problem-oriented mapping of Ukraine.

Graduates of the Department of Geodesy, Cartography and Land Management have employment opportunities across relevant state agencies, departments, and institutions, as well as commercial and private enterprises and organizations, including:

• State Service of Ukraine for Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre (StateGeoCadastre);

• State Agency for Land Resources of Ukraine (StateLandAgency);

• State Space Agency of Ukraine (SSAU);

• “Ukrmorkartohrafiia” branch of the State Enterprise “Ukrhydrohrafiia” under the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Ukraine;

• Topographic Service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine;

• State Scientific Production Enterprise “Kartographia” (SSPE “Kartographia”);

• Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS of Ukraine);

• Research, design, engineering-surveying, and other enterprises.

  • Навчальна лабораторія, яка забезпечує організацію навчального процесу.
  • Навчальна лабораторія цифрової фотограмметрії.

Навчально-допоміжний персонал кафедри складається з 8 співробітників (1 завідувач навчальної лабораторії, 2 фахівця, 2 картографи, 1 геодезист, 1 інженер землевпорядник, 1 старший лаборант), які забезпечують навчальний процес.

Структура і зміст навчального плану

Кафедра здійснює підготовку спеціалістів за навчальними планами, які передбачають обов’язкові гуманітарні та соціально-економічні дисципліни; фундаментальні загальнонаукові дисципліни; професійно-орієнтовані дисципліни та фахових дисциплін, що включають спецкурси та семінари, які забезпечують відповідний рівень підготовки бакалаврів та магістрів, навчальні та виробничі практики студентів.

Кафедра забезпечує підготовку вищих наукових кадрів через аспірантуру та докторантуру з затвердженої ВАК України спеціальності 11.00.12 – географічна картографія.

Викладачі та співробітники кафедри проводять наукову роботу з таких напрямів досліджень: геоінформаційне забезпечення картографічного моделювання та розробки карт для потреб освіти, геодинамічні дослідження, зокрема деформації інженерних споруд, зйомки місцевості, в тому числі наземні, із застосуванням методів цифрової фотограмметрії при архітектурних вимірах та реконструкціях, комплексне тематичне картографування, зокрема еколого- та медико-географічне, проблемно-орієнтоване картографування України.

Міжнародні проекти та академічна мобільність

      Українсько-канадський проект «Закладення основи інфраструктури просторових даних: забезпечення бази в українському уряді для підтримки стабільного економічного зростання» (2014-2018 рр.) /  project Laying the Foundation for a Spatial Data Infrastructure: Building Capacity within the Ukrainian Government to Support Sustainable Economic Growth, Project # S-065681. Стажування  у Ванкуверському острівному університеті (Канада, Vancouver Island University. Faculty of Informational Education) пройшли викладачі кафедри: проф.Даценко Л.М. та ас.Молочко М.А.

      Доц.Гончаренко О.С. пройшов міжнародне стажування на факультеті Освіти Білостоцького університету, Польща (Faculty of Education, University of Bialystok, Poland) в обсязі 180 год. (6 ECTS) і отримав сертифікат, який підтверджує проходження стажування у науковій установі в країні, яка входить до Європейського Союзу.

      Магістр ОНП КГІС Шинкаренко Анна під керівництвом проф.Даценко Л.М. в рамках академічної мобільності пройшла навчання у Ванкуверському острівному університеті за програмою Mitacs (Change detection and assessment of destroyed urban infrastructure using remote sensing analysis, Application Ref. : IT32896; Funding Request Ref. : FR97313). January 6, 2023 to April 30, 2023.)

      Викладачі кафедри (проф.Даценко Л.М., доц.Тітова С.В.) приймають активну участь у робочих нарадах/вебінарах (разом з UK Geospatial Commission) щодо шляхів розвитку Національної інфраструктури геопросторових даних та засобів підготовки фахівців, необхідних для цього, які проводяться за ініціативи Програми USAID з аграрного та сільського розвитку (АГРО) та Міністерства аграрної політики та продовольства України (2022-2023 рр.).

      Викладачі кафедри приймали участь у міжнародному тренінг-вебінарів Держгеокадастру (Тітова С.В., Даценко Л.М. – «Socioeconomic impact assessment – determining the benefits of geospatial information and systems») (2022 р.).
      У квітні-червні 2021 р. проф. Даценко Л.М. стала учасником обговорення та була долучена до роботи з міжнародними експертами проекту «Карти для сприяння належному управлінню землями в Україні» щодо оцінки базового рівня розвитку геопросторової інформації за методологією ООН та Світового банку IGIF – Рамкової програми інтегрованої геопросторової інформації.
       В рамках академічної мобільності у лютому, липні та серпні 2022 р. студентка 3 курсу Софія Сидоренко ОПП ГтЗ приймала участь у навчальних курсах: «E-fundraising», «Youth in policy dialogue», «Youth steps in archaeobotany» – проекти, які фінансуються ЄК за програмою Erasmus Plus.
       В рамках програми “Еразмус+” на кафедрі геодезії та картографії відбулися відкриті лекції для студентів та викладачів проведені викладачами Республіканського університету м. Сівас (Туреччина, лютий 2022).

Співробітники кафедри приймають активну участь в роботі:

  • журі Всеукраїнських олімпіад з географії
  • журі Всеукраїнських турнірів з географії
  • журі конкурсу «Вчитель року» з географії
  • робочої групи з розробки програми ЗНО
  • робочої групи з розробки навчальних програм з географії для учнів 5-9 класів загальноосвітніх навчальних закладів
  • робочої групи із розроблення навчальних програм з географії для учнів 10-11 класів загальноосвітніх навчальних закладів (Профільний рівень)
  • Науково-методичної комісії з географії МОН України

На базі кафедри видається збірник наукових праць (1996-2009 рр. – «Картографія та вища школа», з 2010 р. – «Часопис картографії». З 2000 р. (вип. 4) збірник зареєстровано у ВАК України як фахове видання з географічних наук. Співробітники кафедри є членами науково-редакційних колегій збірників: «Вісник геодезії та картографії», «Картографія та вища школа».

В різні часи кафедру очолювали відомі вчені:
